Imagine what The Allman Brothers Band might have sounded like if they'd come up not so much out of central Georgia, but more along the Mississippi River. Instead of Macon and Statesboro, imagine Memphis, the rural river towns, and New Orleans seeping in through their instruments. That gives you a feel for Gregg's two-hour set here in Pompano Beach (October 26, 2007).

Just as he finished Midnight Rider, I thought, "I'd like to hear Whipping Post about right now." In my head I started playing the eleven-beat intro. To my surprise, coincidentally the band did start into it—but now reworked in two. Once I got used to it, I liked this arrangement almost as much as the classic (certainly much better than Clapton's bluesy-woozy take on Layla.)

I couldn't get any really decent photos, thanks to dim stage lights (and stage hands blocking access to the front of the stage). The two QuickTime clips, though limited, do give a bit of the feel for the evening.

(Thursday night before this, Jan and I had our first class in Latin Dancing; for the following night, Jan had bought us tickets to the Florida Grand Opera's season premiere of Aida.)
