all images © Chuck Bryant Keith Emerson's Moog solo on Lucky Man hooked me. I quickly became a synth fanatic in junior high. I loved EL&P as one of the best prog rock bands. As an adult I'll concede that they came across overblown and ostentatious sometimes, sure, but still they did exciting and innovative stuff, and kept rockin' anyhow. Until this point I'd been spending my paper route money on, say, The Monkees. With EL&P, King Crimson, Yes, and even Iron Butterfly, seventh grade definitely changed things. The first batch of shots I took in Mobile, Alabama, in about 1969, maybe 1970. I'm pretty sure they played Tarkus at this show and I think tickets cost $3.50. General admission let me get pretty close, but even so I had to do a pretty good bit of Photoshop work with the Instamatic prints to enhance them to this level.
A few years later I saw EL&P twice more: once in Birmingham (excellent shots on Set 2), and once in Jackson, Mississippi. The shots below I took in the Jackson Coliseum. No one bothered me about getting close enough to take these candid shots, but I didn't risk approaching the artists for an autograph or a posed shot.
