Big Bag o' Broughaha
(Moral and Doctrinal Issues)

This page will link to a few PDF’s of studies on a few moral/doctrinal issues often considered significant among the conservative Christian circles in which I grew up. As I studied these issues—from within my fundamentalist premises, remember—in almost every case I found that a thorough and consistent application of that hermeneutic simply failed to support the “moral teachings” I was given. In fact, more often than not, I found that a diligent literalist study often contradicted what I'd accepted, and further taught, as “What The Bible Says.”

Some of these turned out just embarrassingly simplistic and shallow (e.g., dancing, social drinking) — merely artifacts of prudishness and puritanism, however well-intentioned. Others have at least the potential for more significant moral weight. A few examples for which I plan to post links:

• divorce

• women’s role in church leadership

• abortion

• assertions of the “Christian” nature of America

• Christianity and pacifism
