Course Types:

  • Point to Point starts at one point and finishes at another far enough away that participants need shuttles (e.g., park at the finish area, shuttle to the start). Examples: New York City, Maui, Clarence DeMar, Ocean Drive, Lost Dutchman.
  • Out/Back starts at one point, goes out to halfway, returns on same course to roughly the same point. May involve repeats or different segments. Examples: Tallahassee, Easter (double), Mid-South, Mississippi, Virginia Creeper (five out/backs).
  • Loop starts at one point, proceeds forward to return to the same point (or very close), but without turning back on itself as an out/back does. May involve repeats or out/back segments. Examples: Chicago, Cape Cod, North Country Trail, Potawatomi Trail (double), Rib Run (double). Mercedes and Darkside loops each include an out/back segment so short that it doesn't bear mention (other than here for clarification).
  • Modified: any course including multiple substantial elements or variations not easily summarized. The University of Okoboji loops to the start, overlaps some 5.5 miles, then breaks off to a separate finish. Indianapolis consists largely of three separate out/backs. Coeur d'Alene consists of mostly a loop that includes a substantial, and very scenic, out/back.

These labels offer my assessment of the most descriptive representation of the course overall; individuals may differ on which part matters more.
