Washington, D.C.

The MCM course starts near Iwo Jima, heads south on Jefferson Davis Highway to a loop around Pentagon City, back up Jeff Davis, across the Key Bridge into Georgetown, east down The Mall, around the Capitol, back west on The Mall, around East Potomac Park to Hains Point and back, over the 14th Street Bridge, again past the Pentagon and once more up Jeff Davis to finish at the Iwo Jima Memorial. Convoluted—and worth every step.

0630 hours. Temps maybe high 40's at the sanctioned early start. Not everything was ready for us: no water at the first aid station; an unmarked turn added maybe a quarter-mile before I and a couple of others figured out what had happened.

As I neared the White House at 9:00 a.m.
I heard the 105mm cannon blast a mile away, signaling the full start.

I covered another six miles before the first runner passed me at m18. Superb crowd support helped me finish pretty well even on the final uphill to Iwo Jima, crossing the line at 1215 hours.
