A wonderful autumn day, cool and clear. I set out alone at 8:20 into quiet, lovely rural Maryland. With aid stations only every 3 to 3.5 miles, I loaded my CamelBak with Gatorade, two apple juice containers, three GatorBars, two GatorLodes—the largest load I've ever carried. After 1.5 miles on paved roads, the rest of the course runs out and back on a well-maintained rail-to-trail through Gunpowder Falls State Park.
Beavers at work? Or runners trying to cope with carb depletion? At m22 I thought I might break 5:30 but the m23 split indicated that would require sustaining an 11:15 pace to the end. Not realistic. Still, I made good negative splits and clocked my second best so far. I even felt quite good at the finish.
