Maine

I drove some six hours to Portland after conducting a workshop in Montreal. Loaded up Saturday night at Country Buffet. Set out on a 6:45 a.m. early start, temps 40ish. A sluggish first mile concerned me a bit, but I got into gear in the next couple of miles. Enjoyed some lovely views around the lake.

A blurry VHS-capture image of Sasquatch beginning the marathon.

Having always only racewalked my marathons, today I jogged intermittently. Felt very confident in first half and pretty good in the second. Excellent fluids support, very friendly but few spectators in the residential communities around Portland. Maine's "gentle rolling hills" posed less challenge than, say, Charlotte, NC, but they took their toll.

Mrs. Nelson's students showed up at several points on the course.

No Photoshop effects. Just bright sunlight and autumn botany.

I can't definitely assess the trade-off of jogging versus my racewalking, but I suspect I finished 5-10 minutes better than I would have by racewalking alone.

A few orange sections at about 20 tasted sooo good! Jogging became more burdened in final miles (but probably no more than steady racewalking would have; I don't yet have experience to compare). A brief massage, a shower back at the Fairfield, and pizza lunch in Freeport all helped. Minimal stiffness in following days.
