THE APPROACH. Simply driving Highway 27 south from Enterprise brings back plenty of memories for me, given how many times I made the trip during high school and college years. Several of those trips I made on my bike from Andalusia (about a three-hour ride).

Here we turn left. We are not allowed to go straight ahead
(into The Village).

CAMPUS AND PEOPLE

The site of the former chow hall, destroyed by a tornado. Or perhaps a group of
third graders. Or perhaps there's little difference.

Pool: still the same. (They've changed the water.)

Office: still the same.

Girls’ camp: now four cabins (three when I attended).
And notice the nurse’s very nice building to the far left, new this year.

These benches replace the logs we used to sit on,
but seeing these brings back plenty of memories.

Boys’ camp, also now four cabins, and pavement
connecting the cabins to the bathhouse.

Session Directors Jack and Donna Madaris pose with
their private stash of WMDs. Water Balloon Technology
now includes a large slingshot “launcher.”

Pavilion: still the same (only minor alterations).

Lanyards: still the same.

Bell: still the same. Still unwelcome at 7:00 a.m.

Campers.

New chow hall—air conditioned. And staff has to clean the floor after meals.
Notice the absence of poles: no climbing to the rafters.

I dunno—it looks too nice for camp. It has no character.

Most of the session staff (above), prepared for the evening activity (two shots below).

TRAILS AND CHAPEL

Behind the new chow hall (formerly from the Pavilion). Not a commonly used trail;
we might have one hike that would come up this way.

Toward chapel.

Chapel: still the same. (OK, new curtains)

Swinging bridge: still the same, but the trail approaches it differently.
Crossing this bridge leads to the now overgrown area that I think we used for bonfires (below).

The main trail now veers to the left before the bridge, leading to the newer bonfire area (below).

METAPHORS

Old and new, side by side. Things change. Things blend. Things coexist.
Birth, growth, death—all in the flow.

Seeking roots.
For me the roots I establshed at WCYC lie largely in relationships and emotional grounding.
The inestimable value of these enduring connections with individuals,
now dear friends over time, despite distance, far outweighs any specific beliefs.
